For the past 60 years, balloons have proved a platform of choice, complementing satellites with their unique ability to stay aloft for long periods at altitudes of 20 to 40 kilometres and collect in-situ data on winds, greenhouse gases, aerosols and radiation.

  2. France-Australia space cooperation- CNES and CSIRO sign agreement on PILOT balloon mission

    Thursday 21 July in Sydney, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall and CSIRO Chief Executive Larry Marshall signed a cooperation agreement concerning the PILOT mission set to launch from Alice Springs in March-April 2017. PILOT intends to map the direction and intensity of the Milky Way’s magnetic field and to gain new insights into the magnetic properties of interstellar dust grains.

    The objective of the Concordiasi mission is to understand better the enlargement of the hole in the Antarctica's ozone layer during each austral spring and to increase our knowledge on climate in those regions. To study the Earth's climate, the atmosphere has to be studied as a whole. Studying the poles is particularly important because of their specific sensitivity to climate changes and the poor frequency of the observations performed by the standard meteorological systems.
