OBJECTIFS SCIENTIFIQUES SARAL/AltiKa
 

L'objectif scientifique central de SARAL/AltiKa est la méso-échelle océanique.

On définit la variabilité méso-échelle océanique comme une classe de phénomènes très énergétiques, de longueurs d'ondes comprises entre 50 et 500 km et de périodes comprises entre quelques jours et un an. L'énergie cinétique de la variabilité méso-échelle est d'un ordre de grandeur supérieur à celle de la circulation moyenne. La description de la méso-échelle est donc indispensable pour comprendre la dynamique de l'océan y compris la circulation moyenne et ses effets climatiques (via les interactions turbulence méso-échelle/courant moyen).

L'objectif scientifique central de SARAL/AltiKa se décline en sous-thèmes incluant :

    études scientifiques intrinsèques de la dynamique océanique à méso-échelle : observations, analyses théoriques, modélisation, assimilation de données, paramétrisation, ...

    amélioration de la compréhension de la composante océanique du système climatique : investigation d'un certain nombre de processus locaux de petite et moyenne échelle actuellement mal connus et mal compris et qui ont un impact sur la modélisation de la variabilité climatique aux grandes échelles d'espace et de temps

    contribution à l'étude des phénomènes de dynamique côtière, dont beaucoup sont des phénomènes de petite et moyenne échelle, et dont une bonne restitution permettra d'anticiper de nombreuses applications aval

    contribution à l'océanographie opérationnelle, qui est très demandeuse en termes de données d'observation in situ et spatiales.

Les objectifs secondaires de SARAL/AltiKa sont notamment le suivi du niveau des principales surfaces d'eaux continentales (lacs, fleuves, mers fermées), le suivi des variations du niveau moyen des mers, l'observation des océans polaires, l'analyse et la prévision des champs de vagues, l'étude des glaces continentales (grâce aux performances améliorées de la bande Ka) et glaces de mer, l'accès à une climatologie des faibles pluies (offert en contrepartie de la sensibilité de la bande Ka aux nuages et faibles pluies) et la biogéochimie marine (notamment au travers du rôle de la physique de méso et subméso-échelle).
