Each of both spacecraft will have a scientific payload composed of instruments developed by european or american scientific laboratories : 11 instruments for the Orbiter, and 10 instruments for the Lander. For more details about those instruments see the ESA ROSETTA web site.

Due to the required performances (in launched mass and requested escape velocity), an ARIANE-5 launcher was used (dedicated launch). The launch took place the 2nd of March 2004.
